About Us

We are a Thuringian company and have been an established manufacturer of commercial vehicle axles for 150 years. GFA Gothaer Fahrzeugachsen GmbH distributes trailer axles in the load range from 3.2t to 7.5t. Our focus is primarily on the adaptation and development of special axles, preferably in our load range. We are also specialised in the manufacture of turned and milled components, as well as robot-welded assemblies.

GFA – An axle manufacturer with a long tradition

In 1864, the foundation charter of a joint-stock company for construction in Gotha was issued, initiated by a number of important Gotha personalities. In 1874, the company was taken over by the railway and renamed the “Königlich-Preußische Eisenbahnreparaturwerkstatt”.

The company grew to 361 employees within a few years and was the largest factory in Gotha at the time. At that time, two-, three- and four-axle vehicles were repaired. For this purpose, various departments were formed for the required trades and so a paint shop, woodworking shop, saddlery, lathe shop, forge, iron foundry and a switch shop were also established, which was later spun off into a separate switch factory.

From 1924, passenger and freight wagons were repaired under the new name RAW (Reichsbahnausbesserungswerk) Gotha. A new addition was the refurbishment of track lugs. When the city of Gotha was heavily bombed at the end of the Second World War, it had to be determined in February 1945 that 85% of the RAW had been destroyed. After makeshift repairs, production was resumed despite severe damage and difficulties.

Engineering Art from Germany – Gothaer Achsen

The GFA company is part of the large automotive supplier industry. The automobile is known worldwide as the successful product of German engineering. As an export hit, it distinguishes the German skills

  • Timeliness
  • Reliability
  • Perfection in design and workmanship
  • Durability
  • etc.

.

For decades, the GFA has been thinking about how the Gothaer axles can be further improved, how vehicle manufacturers can be accommodated in order to design simpler assembly conditions, both during initial installation and in the context of maintenance. Constant changes to the law and market reactions require constant further development and improvement.

Gothaer axles – light weight and easy installation

We have lighter axle tubes than our competitors and simpler bearing designs on the wheel hub, which simplifies assembly and maintenance/servicing. Furthermore, our wheel suspension interfaces (supports and weld-on plates) are very popular because the attachment to the vehicle frame is uncomplicated.

Short delivery routes – Flexible production

For many years, the automotive supply industry has been accustomed to delivering within very tight time frames. A trouble-free supply chain is the prerequisite for this performance in terms of punctuality. In global crises that last longer, such as the Corona crisis, the supply chain comes under pressure. In global crises that last longer, such as the Corona crisis, the supply chain comes under pressure. In such crises, the German location for Gothaer Achen production is a competitive advantage in terms of speed and flexibility that should not be underestimated.

We are proud to be part of this overall system of German automotive suppliers and have enjoyed interesting and constant challenges since the very beginning.
